About Boat Making Kits, Part 1

Some of the specialized supplies and tools used to build a boat from wooden boat plans are not available at a regular hardware store. Instead, they can be purchased from marine supply stores where they usually come packaged in kit form. These kits are a great source for all of the special items needed to build a wooden boat. When you purchase a boat kit, make sure to get one that is intended for wooden boats. Wood, aluminum and fiberglass each require a specific kit.
Look for these items in kits to be used with wooden boat plans:
Marine Tool Kit- A set of rust-resistant, chrome-plated tools are useful when building any type of boat or boat trailer. A multipurpose power tool kit can also be purchased with attachments for sanding, scraping, grinding and removing dust.
Stitch and Glue- Wooden boat plans that require stitch and glue construction need special supplies like copper stitching wire and fiberglass tape and resin. These items will be included in a stitch and glue kit.
Marine Fasteners- Wooden boats require fastening hardware that is corrosion-resistant and extra strong. Bronze annular nails and silicon bronze screws are the recommended fasteners for boats. They can be purchased in a marine fastener kit.
Sailboat Supplies - If your wooden boat plans are for a sailboat, a variety of sailboat-specific supplies are available in kit form. Rigging kits include the lines, shrouds and halyards that support the mast and sails. A sailing hardware kit includes specialized hardware such as gudgeons, blocks, cleats, goosenecks, pintles and eye straps. Hardware for masts and booms can also be purchased in a kit.
Sails - You can save money by purchasing sail kits that provide precut sails in standard sizes instead of ordering custom-made sails. If you're building a dinghy, you may want to buy a sail kit that includes a collapsible aluminum mast.
Epoxy - Some wooden and laminate parts of the boat may call for epoxy for waterproofing and strength. Epoxy is also commonly used for boat repairs. Epoxy kits include epoxy resin and supplies used for mixing and application such as trays, mixing sticks, rollers, brushes and gloves.
Fiberglass Resin- If your wooden boat plans call for a portion of your boat to be treated with fiberglass resin, look for a fiberglass covering kit. This kit will usually include epoxy resin and hardener and fiberglass cloth. Most kits also include some of the tools used to apply resin, including rollers, brushes and squeegees.
Boat Trailer - For boats that are less than 15 feet, you can build a trailer from a kit. Many kits provide all the materials you'll need, including a galvanized steel frame, a DOT-approved light system and galvanized wheels.
Unless your wooden boat plans are for a personal watercraft like a canoe or kayak, you won't find boat kids that include plywood, lumber and other basic construction materials. It's less expensive to buy your wood at a local lumber yard than to pay shipping coasts for a boat building kit that includes it.
